BOARDING TO GETTING OFF

How to ride buses

The photos below show the common rear-door boarding and front-door exit procedure used on many local buses in Tottori and Shimane. Always follow the vehicle signs because some routes differ.

Check the route number and destination

Before boarding, confirm the route number and destination on the front or side display. The small number identifies the route; the large text shows the destination.

At a stop served in both directions, make sure the bus is travelling the right way.

Board: ticket or blue IC reader

On a rear-door boarding bus, cash users take one numbered ticket. Near the start of the route, the machine may not issue a ticket; in that case, your fare number is “0.” IC-card users touch the blue reader and do not take a ticket.

Keep the ticket until you get off. Each passenger must use a separate IC card.

Press the stop button and check the fare

When your stop is announced or displayed, press a stop button once. Cash users find their numbered-ticket number on the fare display and check the fare shown for that number.

If you are unsure, show the stop name to the driver before paying.

Pay and exit at the front

Cash: put the numbered ticket and exact fare into the fare box. IC card: touch the yellow reader. Pass users show the pass to the driver.

The fare box does not give change. Only ¥1,000 notes can be exchanged for coins using the change machine. Use it only while the bus is stopped, or ask the driver.
