Buying Regular JR Tickets

Choose the machine or counter that matches your journey. A limited express usually needs both a basic fare and a limited express ticket.

THREE OPTIONS

Where to buy a JR ticket

The available equipment differs by station.
近

Near-distance ticket machine

For a simple local journey. Check the fare map, select the amount or destination, choose the number of passengers and pay.

Midori ticket machine

For basic fares, limited express tickets and reserved seats. Use journey search and confirm the route, train and seat before payment.

When you cannot buy a ticket before boarding

This is the general paper-ticket procedure outside IC use. Follow signs and onboard instructions because the equipment and door operation vary by line.
  1. 1

    Check the station

Use a ticket machine or boarding certificate machine if one is provided.

  2. 2

    Board and keep proof

If instructed, take a numbered ticket or boarding certificate and keep it until you leave.

  3. 3

    Check the fare

Use the onboard fare display or ask the driver or conductor.

  4. 4

    Pay when leaving

Pay the driver’s fare box or follow the collection method shown at the destination station.

!If both stations accept ICOCA and you are using an IC card, follow the IC-card guide instead.
